Reaction: Crave’s Next Big Queer Comedy Series, 'Slo Pitch'
Following the global phenomenon of Heated Rivalry—the hit series that took queer sports drama to international heights—Canadian streaming platform Crave is keeping the momentum going. But this time, they’re trading the ice rink for the softball diamond, and the high-stakes drama for outright comedic chaos.
Enter Slo Pitch, a half-hour mockumentary comedy series premiering September 25th on Crave. The team over at Nomads Media got an exclusive early look, diving into Episode 1 to share our reaction to what might just be the fall’s most hilarious queer sports sitcom.
What is Slo Pitch All About?
Expanded from the beloved short-form web series of the same name, Slo Pitch plunges viewers into the world of beer-league softball.
The 10-episode series follows Coach Joanne Pico (played by Jess Salgueiro), the overly dedicated manager of The Public Lass Brovaries. The Brovaries are six-time league losers who care more about dugout beers, chaotic drama, and meeting women than actually hitting home runs.
When Joanne is brutally dumped by her long-term girlfriend—who immediately leaves to play for a rival team in the same league—the stakes become deeply personal. Joanne sets out to win the season, win the breakup, and navigate a summer packed with adventures and drama.
Star-Studded Cast & Heavyweight Producers
Created by J Stevens, Karen Knox, and Gwenlyn Cumyn—and developed for television by Katie Ford and Jane Cooper Ford—the series boasts an incredible Canadian creative lineup.
Jess Salgueiro (Frasier, The Expanse) as Coach Joanne Pico
Karen Knox and Gwenlyn Cumyn (co-creators, writers, and stars)
Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek)
Emma Hunter, Chelsea Muirhead, Lane Webber, Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah, and Amanda Cordner
Special Guest Star: Women’s softball legend Ayami Sato, who made history as the first woman to play in a Canadian men’s professional baseball league.
Guest Appearances: Varun Saranga, Laura De Carteret, Don MacLean Jr., Nadine Bhabha, and comedians Carolyn Taylor, Chris Locke, and Chris Sandiford.
Produced by Shaftesbury in association with Boss & Co, the show marks a major milestone as Bell Media’s first project with PAGEBOY Productions, the production house founded by Elliot Page, who serves as an executive producer alongside Emily Hampshire.
